Fay is looking for a forever home. Fay is a very sweet, gentle, and somewhat shy Australian Shepherd. She was born here, just like her sister Filou, who is still with us. Fay’s mom and dad are here for you to meet. Unfortunately, Fay turned out to be too small for the Australian Shepherd standard, which is why we’ve decided to find her a new home. She gets along perfectly with other dogs and children.

About the breed

Australian Shepherd

The Australian Shepherd—also known as Aussie —despite its name—is a purebred American breed. It owes its name to the Merino sheep that were exported from Australia to the U.S. and herded by its ancestors. Today, the Aussie is one of the most popular and versatile dogs in the world: alert, loyal, and always full of energy.

The Australian Shepherd is a true working dog with a heart of gold. He is intelligent, eager to learn, and has almost boundless energy. He forms deep bonds with his family and loves nothing more than to work alongside his owner. Early socialization is important: he may be a bit reserved around strangers at first, but he never shows aggression. An Aussie without a challenge is an Aussie in trouble: mental and physical stimulation are essential.

  • Format: medium-sized, 16–32 kg
  • Height at the withers: 48–58 cm (male), 46–54 cm (female)
  • Coat: medium-length, wavy to slightly wavy, with a dense undercoat
  • Colors: black, warm brown, and merle varieties, with or without white and/or copper (brown) markings
  • Noteworthy: Aussies often have two different eye colors (heterochromia): ranging from blue to brown or green
  • Maintenance: Brush regularly (2–3 times a week), paying extra attention during shedding seasons
  • Average lifespan: Ages 13 to 15

The Australian Shepherd is suitable for:

  • Active homeowners who want to get plenty of exercise every day
  • Families with children who love to play outside
  • People who want to exercise with their dog
  • Owners with experience or a willingness to invest in training
