An independent and alert Japanese breed with a fox-like face and a curly tail. Loyal to its family, but with a mind of its own, so it’s best suited for those with experience in training dogs.
Breed
The Shiba Inu is a small- to medium-sized Japanese breed with a long history as a hunting dog. It is an independent, intelligent dog with a strong will of its own. Shibas are very attached to their home and loyal to their family, but are naturally somewhat more reserved around strangers.
Due to their independent nature, Shibas require consistent, patient training from a young age, along with plenty of early socialization. They have moderate exercise needs but a strong prey drive, so a securely fenced yard and a short leash during walks are recommended. Shibas are known for their cat-like, clean habits and are relatively easy to house-train.
